Los Angeles - Fort Worth Education Directory
L.A. is known to millions as the center of the entertainment industry—from the glamour of old Hollywood to today’s blockbusters, movies and television shows are one of the major exports for the City of Angeles. Los Angeles is a bustling, lively, multicultural city, with great shopping, art museums, music, comedy clubs. Whether you’re looking for fun in the sun or exciting night life, Los Angeles has it all.
Things to See & Do:
Los Angeles
- Stars! As the center of the entertainment industry, L.A. boasts more stars per capita than anywhere else. You never know who’ll you see!
- The Hollywood Sign—visible from almost everywhere!
- Venice is a funky beach neighborhood with real canals and the famous Venice Beach Boardwalk.
- Point Dume—An easy climb to the top of this Malibu bluff leads to an amazing view of the Pacific Ocean.
- Hollywood Walk of Fame & Grauman’s Chinese Theatre—look for your favorite performer’s name embedded in their own star along the sidewalk. See the hand-and-foot prints of countless celebrities since 1927. Red carpet movie premieres continue to be part of the theatre’s history.
- LaBrea Tar Pits—Next to the L.A. County Museum of Art on Wilshire Blvd., the tar pits are a (kind of smelly) reminder of what life—and death—were like 25,000 years ago.
- California Science Center has cool hands-on exhibits and even an IMAX theatre.
- In and Out Burger is the best, simple fast food around. L.A. natives have to have it.
- Malibu Lagoon (23000 Pacific Coast Hwy, half a mile north of the Malibu pier) has tide pools filled with sea creatures and a nature preserve full of birds.
- Museum of Tolerance brings amazing exhibitions to help teach the importance of all cultures. Call ahead as their programs sell out quickly.
- Rodeo Drive has some of the priciest shopping in the U.S. It’s been called "the playground of the rich and famous."
- Santa Monica Pier overlooks the beach and offers arcades and rides for kids of all ages. Try the jumbo Ferris wheel or the historic carousel. The boardwalk below is great for biking or skating, or just walk along the sand.
- The Farmers Market at 3d and Fairfax in the Wilshire district is a charming outdoor market with yummy treats from many cultures and open air tables to relax and enjoy.
- Universal Studios Hollywood—movies are theme of this park. Enjoy studio tours, animal actors, and thrilling rides.
Nightlife:
- The Cobalt Café (22047 Sherman Way) in nearby Canoga Park is a great club for teens because there’s no alcohol served and the cover charge to hear great new indie bands is only $8 to $10.
- Comedy clubs abound in the L.A. area, including the Laugh Factory in Hollywood, the Comedy Store in West Los Angeles, and the Groundlings on Melrose.
- The Hollywood Bowl has been a musical tradition in Los Angeles since 1922. Hear classical, jazz, world music, and more under the stars.
- College campuses like UCLA, USC, Pepperdine, etc. all have concerts, plays, cafés and more for their students and the general public.
Accommodation:
Students visiting L.A. should contact one of these hotels for rates and availability:
- Beverly Garland Holiday Inn at Universal Studios Hollywood
- Cadillac Hotel on Dudley in Venice.
- Farmer's Daughter on Fairfax
- Hollywood Celebrity Hotel on Orchid Ave.
- The Standard–Downtown on South Flower St.
Sports:
You can watch the Dodgers play baseball or the Lakers play basketball. Or you can have your own fun skating, skateboarding, or biking along the boardwalks in Venice or Santa Monica. Or learn to surf at the Santa Monica Surf School offers a summer day camp or private lessons to aspiring surfers.
Transportation:
L.A. may be the most car-dependent large city in the United States. The Santa Monica bus system is fairly clean and reliable, and goes all the way to UCLA in Westwood. For the past 15 years, Los Angeles has been putting in subways (Red and Purple lines) and light rail (Gold, Blue, and Green lines). But to get to most places in and around Los Angeles, you’ll need to go by car. If you need a rental, try EV Rental Cars (www.foxrentacar.com) at the airport to rent a hybrid.
